![]() ![]() ![]() That is why a secondary window is the cost effective way to better sound blocking. The greater the distance, the better! In the two scenarios found in #2 that involve multiple panes of glass, the insulated glass units only have about 3/4" of space between the panes, which is fairly typical. #3 Distance between the panes is also very important. Even further, a window with a single pane of 1/4" laminated glass equals an STC 32. A window with Insulated glass having one double-strength pane and one 3/16" pane yields an STC of 31. For example, insulated, triple-pane glass, with each pane having the same strength and glass thickness equals a Sound Transmission Class (STC) of 29. #2 Glass density must vary from pane to pane and the thicker the better. A lot of sound can follow just a little air. If noise is a problem in your home, there are several different glass options that can help reduce noise transmittance.
